AREQUIPA AND COLCA CANYON |
 |
Arequipa |
|
Arequipa is Peru’s second largest city yet it maintains a laid back atmosphere and a traditional colonial style as it lies in the shadow of El Misti volcano. The city was founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistador Garci Manuel de Carbajal, who named the city as Villa de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora del Valle Hermoso de Arequipa. Today it is known as the White City of Arequipa, due to its historic centre built with white volcanic stone, called "sillar". The city enjoys an eternal spring, sunny climate almost the whole year with temperatures between the 20°C and 24°C during the day which makes Arequipa a pleasant destination at any time of the year. |

Colca Canyon |
 |
Beyond the volcanoes and mountains that flank the city of Arequipa is the Colca Canyon. Most people who visit Arequipa take a tour out to the Cañon de Colca, one of the world’s deepest canyons formed by an enormous seismic fault between the Coropuna (6425m) and Ampato (6325m) volcanoes. The Colca Valley has a large number of agricultural terraces that were built in pre Hispanic eras by pre Inca cultures. Nowadays you can find beautiful unspoilt Andean villages where the local communities are still keeping alive the dress, traditions and way of life of their ancient ancestors.
|
A popular tourist spot is to La Cruz del Cóndor (3320m), a 1½ hours drive from Chivay. From this natural observatory you can see into the deepest part of the canyon, and witness the majestic flight of the Andean Condor, rising on the morning thermals (at around 9am.) |

Highlights |
|
Convento de Santa Catalina - is the most visited building from the Spanish era of the city. Described as a city within a city, this beautiful place with its colours, flowers and little streets provides a brief respite from the outside world and provides a unique view into a by-gone way of life. |
| |
Plaza de Armas- Arequipa's Plaza de Armas is one of the most beautiful in Peru. The main square is surrounded on three sides by colonial buildings with many cafes and restaurants. On the north side of the Plaza is the impressive twin towered cathedral founded in 1612, all constructed from the same white volcanic stone. |
| |
Juanita Mummy - can be found in the Museo Santuarios Andinos . The museum contains the famous mummy "Juanita - the Ice Princess" who was discovered in 1995 just below the peak of the Ampato mountain. Juanita had been well preserved in ice for more than 500 years before volcanic activity melted the surrounding snow. This Inca girl, tightly wrapped in textiles, must have been ritually sacrificed and buried on the mountain peak |
| |
La Cruz del Condor – The famous vantage point of Cruz del Condor has one of the best views down into the canyon. Here it is possible to witness the majestic flight of the condors rising with the morning thermals. |
| |
Chivay – Is a nice, friendly little town at the beginning of the canyon. Thermal springs are located 3 km from town, a number of heated pools have been constructed. A stone "Inca" bridge crosses the Colca River ravine, just to the north of the town. |
