Lima

Built on the banks of the Rio Rimac, Lima is Peru's largest city and its capital. Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, Lima was used as the headquarters of the Spanish conquistadors.  Lima rapidly became one of the most important commercial centres in all of the Americas.

Also known as the “City of Kings”, modern day Lima is not the most attractive of cities.  With a population of almost 10 million people it is a curious mix of modern mega city with large but orderly slum areas and colonial architecture in the city centre.  The climate doesn’t help either as most of the year the capital city is blanketed in low cloud.  This said, Lima offers the visitor many archaeological and natural attractions, excellent history museums and art galleries and cultural exhibitions, modern shopping malls, and a variety of restaurants and bars where one can enjoy both local and international food and drink.  Lima's gastronomic scene is superb its multiethnic culinary tradition is ranked among the finest worldwide.

Highlights
Larco Herrera Museum - The Larco Museum is housed in an 18th century colonial mansion that holds the most extensive collection of pre-Columbian art in Peru. Herrera contains fine examples of textile work, one of which has a world record-breaking 398 threads per inch, as well as the tools ancient Peruvians used to produce metals, huaco ceramics and gold and silver pieces with semiprecious stones.  Larco is one of the few museums in the world where visitors can also enter the storage area if they wish and view its 45,000 classified archaeological objects.  Its masterpieces are considered worldwide icons of Pre-Columbian.

The Cathedral of Lima - The Catedral de Lima was constructed in the City of King’s Plaza de Armas (main square). It is part of the Patrimony of Humanity, as the historical centre of the City. It is one of the most beautiful colonial buildings that exist in Peru. The Church was inaugurated in 1540, with the name of Asuncion de Nuestra Señora..

Gold Museum - This private collection exhibits a glittering collection of pre-Hispanic gold, textiles and ceramics some of which are more than 3,000 years old.  The exhibit contains priceless gold-work jewellery, silver and precious stones.  There is also a collection of antique and modern weapons.  Additionally, there is a display of armour and uniforms, and various objects from diverse times and cultures, some of which date from 1300 B.C.

Pachacamac - The temple of Pachacamac is an archaeological site located 40km southeast of Lima.  The majority of the buildings and temples have been dated to 800 – 1450 AD shortly before the arrival and conquest of the Inca Empire.  The site was considered one of the most important religious centres of the indigenous peoples of the central Andes, and contains a number of pyramids.  Due to the spiritual power that Pachacamac god had in the Andean world, it contained a frequently visited temple. The base was constructed of adobe moat bricks with a stone foundation.

Temperature

Lima's weather and climate isn't what one would expect when travelling to a city located just 12° south of the equator. It’s usually described as mild and warm throughout the year without noteworthy rain making Lima one of the driest capitals in the world. The average temperatures range from 12°C to 18°C (low) and 24°C to 28°C (high). Relative humidity is very high, and produces quickly passing morning fogs from December to April and persistent low clouds and mist from May to November. Sunny, moist and warm summers (December - April) are followed by cloudy, damp and cool winters (May – November)

Weather Conditions due to location:
The reason for Lima's unusual weather conditions is its location. The capital of Peru is lying directly at the Pacific Ocean in an arid region of plains that rise to the east to the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The cold Humboldt Current which runs along most of the Peruvian and Chilean coast moderates the heat of the tropical sun, but at the same time produces high humidity with clouds and mist. The Andes Mountains to the east of the city prevent the tropical climate including storms and rains from the Amazon basin reaching the coast.

The Humboldt Current
The Humboldt Current was named after Alexander von Humboldt and is one of the major up welling systems of the world, supporting an extraordinary richness of marine life. The Peruvian coast is one of the richest areas of the world in terms of biomass and diversity. Water temperatures are generally very low (between 13 to 14º C in winter and 15 to 17º C in summer) and swimming is a really "refreshing" experience...

Rainfall

The altitude in which Cusco is found and its proximity to the equator make the city's climate so special. There are just 2 well-defined seasons: a dry season and another rainy one. The dry season is from May to October and the rainy season from November to April. Generally, rainfall fluctuates between 600 to 880 mm. per year, that is between 31.5 to 34.5 inches.
